Dream Afloat began with photographs I took while snorkeling at Ningaloo Reef in Australia. It was originally part of a much larger painting of the reef — a painting that, frankly, did not work. But parts of it did.
I especially loved this fish and the world around it. The reef at Ningaloo was almost overwhelming with life: color, movement, plants and creatures layered over one another, with something happening everywhere you looked. I tried to let the watercolor behave a little like that — blooming, running and colliding, with bits of life appearing and disappearing into the background.
Against all of that chaos, this fish seemed to be simply floating through its own strange, beautiful world.
Original 8×8 watercolor mounted on cradleboard. The natural wood sides are sealed and left unpainted. Ready to hang as-is or frame if preferred. Shipped carefully protected.
