I painted Drifting Home from a photograph I took at Ningaloo Reef in Australia, where we actually got to swim with this sea turtle for a while. My husband was in the original photo. I cropped him out. Sorry, honey.
What I remember most was the contrast. Below us, the reef was teeming with color, movement, and all kinds of underwater goings-on. And this turtle seemed completely unbothered by any of it. He just drifted along near the surface with these ridiculous floating humans as if he'd decided we seemed harmless enough.
That's what I wanted to paint—not so much the reef itself, but that feeling of calm above all that activity. Just a turtle moving quietly through blue water, entirely at home.
Original 9×12 watercolor on paper. Sold unframed and unmatted so it can be finished to your taste. Shipped flat with archival protective materials.
Because original watercolor paper sizes don’t always correspond to standard ready-made frames, custom matting or framing may offer the best fit.
