Inspired by a stormy view of Milford Sound in New Zealand, Fjord Storm explores the drama of mountains disappearing into rain and mist. Deep blue-green cliffs push into pale water while the landscape beyond dissolves into shifting washes of gray, blue, and soft neutral tones.
Rather than trying to reproduce the scene literally, I was drawn to the contrast between the immense, dark weight of the mountains and the almost weightless atmosphere surrounding them. Loose washes, granulation, blooms, and expressive marks allow the landscape to emerge and disappear across the paper.
