Rising Toward Morning came out of a period when I was trying to loosen up. I had watched another watercolor artist paint poppies plein air, building flowers out of loose shapes against these wild, abstracted backgrounds, and it completely changed the way I thought about painting them.
I started finding the flowers on the page instead of carefully drawing each one first, using different references, feeling my way through their forms. It was one of those small breakthroughs that changes more than you realize at the time.
I still love the freedom in this one: the poppies reaching upward through all that color, as though they're finding their way toward the light. And I love that something another artist taught me found its way into my own work. Art gets passed along that way, from one person to another, each of us making something different from what we were given.
