Unfolding began with a close-up photo I took of a flower at a friend's house in Florida. I don't actually know what kind of flower it was—not a rose, I don't think. What caught my attention was the swirl.
I'm always drawn to a sense of motion in flowers. Sometimes it's obvious, like stems and blossoms swaying in the wind. Other times the movement is in the shape of the flower itself—the repetition and rhythm of petals curling around one another.
This flower had a lot of rhythm. I wanted the painting to follow that movement, sweeping inward through all those layers of pink, crimson and plum.
